Hilton Head Hotel Photographer

Jim Barber is a hotel photographer based in Forsyth, GA

I had a great time photographing this hotel one sunny day last month.  The owner was extremely pleased to have new images for the website.  The project involved photographing 4 different room types, the lobby, vending area, fitness area, breakfast and pool areas as well as exterior shots.  I was on site from 5pm til 8am.  Being on site for 15 hours allows me to shoot the exterior shots at sunset, twilight and sunrise.  It also allows me to photograph the public areas without interferring with hotel operations.  Hotel managers tell me that very few hotel photographers invest this much time in doing their photography.  The final package of files that I delivered to the facility contained over 20 images.  Here's a sample of the images.

Hotel photography in Macon, GA

I was recently asked to do some hotel photography for a local facility in Macon, GA.  The owner wanted to put some fresh images on the internet after remodeling the lobby and several rooms.  Time of day is such an important element when doing the exterior shots.  When doing these kind of projects, I arrive before sunset and leave after sunrise.  This strategy gives me 2 chances to get great light on the main exterior elements.  For the interior shots (which include windows in the image), the best time is 30 mins before and after sunset when the intensity of light outside is fairly close to the inside lighting.  For those hotels that feature a breakfast for guests,  I ask the employees to set up early so I can photograph before the guests arrive.  On this particular shoot, I produced 58 images for the hotel owner.  I've included a small sample below.

Many times, your first contact with a potential client won’t be in person.  If the customer sees your picture on a brochure or billboard before meeting you in person, you want that  head shot to portray you as pleasant to work with, an expert in your field and being trustworthy.

A well crafted head shot can make all the difference in whether the new customer will follow through with a phone call or not.

Here are some tips on getting the most out of your next head shot:

  • Use a professional photographer – the difference that studio lighting and posing accessories can make is enormous.
  • Dress for success – People who provide professional services (realtors, bankers, lawyers)  should dress in a suit.  If your job requires you to wear a uniform, wear your uniform to the shoot.  By all means, avoid shirts / blouses with stripes, plaids, polka dots because the head shot will be more effective if your face is the center of attention.
  • Grooming – Ladies, if you find a new hair style that you’ll be using for a while, maybe it’s time for a new head shot.
